All in the comfort of your coziest pants while eating the most delicious snacks.

Double lucky for you that I’m here sharing some of my top tips on how to hire a branding photographer so you spend your hard earned money in the best way possible.

Making sure you and your new ‘tog bestie mesh organically is of top tier importance. But how can you ensure that all the things match when you have no clue on what to look for?

Read on and I’ll share with you just that;

BEFORE we jump in, and before you hire a photographer, can you answer these questions? Do you know your brand message? Do you have a clear brand voice? Does your brand have an identity + colours? Do you know where you will be using your images and how you will be using your images? The clearer you are with what you’re asking for, the more intentional this project will be.

Now, without further ado;

How To Hire a Branding Photographer!

Tip No. 1: Check out their online portfolio

Check out the photographers’ website and see if they have examples of their work. Does what you see resonate with what look you’re hoping to achieve (inspire you, energize you, do you want images they've taken in your marketing)? A photographer is an artist with their own unique style. If what you see in their portfolio isn’t what you’re looking for, it’s time to move on. You can see some work from previous client sessions I’ve had the opportunity to create for. Each client will have unique needs, and it is such a pleasure to be able to support each vision.

Tip No. 2: Does this photographer specialize in commercial photography?

What I mean by this is are they comfortable with creating a branding photoshoot with you and are they experienced with everything that comes with it. There are things I’m sure you haven’t thought of that you’ll need. As an example; a commercial license for use. Traditional portrait photographers typically do not include commercial usage in their photoshoot agreements. This is an important step to understand and creates super clear guidelines for usage.

Tip No. 3: Confirm that your session includes a discovery call and /or consultation.

Is this something offered so you can see if you’re a good fit? Is a detailed planning session also included? These are some very important factors to have available for you in order to plan the best possible session. Your photographer needs to know what you’re looking for so they can deliver it to you! If you’re looking to fill up pinterest or any other social media channel as a part of your marketing strategy, there’s definitely a strategy for a shot list. Maybe booking multiple content photoshoots is what you need. All of these things gets discovered in a discovery call! (clever name, I know). You can see a sneak peek here of what the process would look like when reaching out to connect with me.

Tip No. 4: Budget

Usually a photographer will offer custom quotes based on a series of questions they’d have for you. It’s important to have a realistic idea of what you could spend on a photographer. Branding photoshoots can be expensive, so understanding your finances before booking is vital. If possible, create some flexibility in that budget and be prepared. You might go above what you thought you'd spend. Being ready to invest in your brand's images will support a successful photoshoot. This part of the research might tell you that saving for a little while to afford the photographer you want is the right choice. Lets get a conversation going to see how I can help support you with your journey.

Tip No. 5: Referrals

When choosing someone local to you, it would be beneficial to speak with a previous client the photographer has worked with. Being in the world of small business crossing paths with someone who can refer a photographer to you based on their experience would be ideal. We all know that a referral for a small business is like gold; so ask around!

There are tons of capable photographers out there. I’m going to assume that there are even loads of them whose style inspires you. BUT, in addition to great photos, you'll want a wonderful experience so making sure that you vibe well during your initial call together. You need a photographer who is able to lead you, guide you, and who isn’t afraid to be a little goofy when needing to break the ice. A photographer who can support your feelings, so making sure that your personalities mesh will have you looking back on your shoot experience with fond memories!
